2024 Lexus RX 450h+ Plug-In Hybrid: Real-World Range Test and First Impressions

Today, we’re diving into the 2024 Lexus RX 450h+ Plug-In Hybrid—a first for Lexus in this segment. Positioned just below the RX 500h F Sport, this model offers impressive performance and refinement, making it a strong contender in the luxury hybrid market. Over the past week, I’ve had the pleasure of testing this vehicle, and while my full driving impressions are coming soon, today’s focus is on its real-world electric-only range. Let’s see how close we get to its EPA-estimated 37 miles.

Key Specs of the RX 450h+

Before diving into the range test, here’s a quick overview of what powers the RX 450h+:

  • Battery: 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery
  • Motors: Three electric motors (two up front, one at the rear)
  • Gas Engine: 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder
  • Transmission: eCVT
  • Combined Power Output: 305 horsepower
  • Electric-Only Output: ~179 horsepower and ~200 lb-ft of torque

In electric-only mode, the RX 450h+ offers surprising acceleration. It keeps up with traffic effortlessly and can handle full-throttle without engaging the gas engine—unless switched manually to hybrid mode or if the battery depletes.

The Range Test Route

For this test, I used my standard 30-mile loop, which includes:

  1. Highway Driving: 14 miles at 70+ mph
  2. Moderate Speeds: 12-13 miles at 45-60 mph, with stoplights
  3. City Driving: 4-6 miles under 45 mph

This mix mirrors typical driving conditions. Temperatures during the test were slightly cooler than previous ones, but not enough to skew results significantly.

On the Road: Observations

Driving the RX 450h+ in electric-only mode is a serene experience. Lexus has mastered cabin insulation, making it exceptionally quiet and comfortable. The luxury features—heated and ventilated seats, dual-memory functions, and premium trims—create a premium driving environment.

Acceleration:
Merging onto highways, the RX 450h+ felt confident. While not the most performance-oriented plug-in hybrid, its electric motors delivered smooth and adequate power. Most drivers will find it perfectly capable for everyday scenarios.

Cruise Control and Safety Features:
With Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, adaptive cruise control, and driver-monitoring tech, the RX feels modern and secure. However, the system’s vigilance can be slightly intrusive, issuing warnings even during brief glances away from the road.

Range Test Results

Here’s how the RX performed:

  1. Highway and Mixed Driving:
    • At 70 mph, it consumed energy steadily but maintained a competitive range.
    • Transitioned seamlessly into hybrid mode when the battery reached its lower threshold.
  2. Final Results:
    • Total Range Achieved: 36 miles (just one mile shy of the EPA estimate).
    • Efficiency: 2.4 miles per kWh—comparable to other hybrids I’ve tested.

For context:

  • The Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 plug-in hybrids struggled with seamless electric-only operation, often engaging their gas engines prematurely.
  • The Volvo XC60 Recharge excelled, surpassing its EPA rating, though with a smaller battery pack.

The Verdict

The 2024 Lexus RX 450h+ delivers on luxury, comfort, and usability. It’s an excellent option for those who prioritize a premium driving experience alongside decent electric range.

Pros:

Advertisements
  • Quiet, luxurious cabin
  • Smooth and capable electric-only performance
  • High-quality build and extensive feature set

Cons:

  • Price: At $76,000 fully loaded, it’s on the higher end for its class.
  • Slightly underdelivered on EPA range, though still competitive.

Final Thoughts

While the RX 450h+ doesn’t redefine the plug-in hybrid space, it solidifies Lexus as a serious contender in this growing market. If you’re seeking a luxurious, well-rounded hybrid SUV, this one should be on your radar.

Have you tested the RX 450h+ or own one? What are your thoughts on its performance and range? Drop your comments below!
