In this review, I’ll discuss whether the 2025 BMW X4 M40i is the better option or if you should wait for the updated X3. I’ll also cover some pros and cons, as well as comparable rivals.
Exterior Design
Starting with the front, the X4 M40i features standard LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights that flow into the gloss black kidney grille with M badging. The lower section is highlighted with gloss black trim and features front parking sensors.
However, it lacks a standard 360° reverse camera, which I consider a con. On the positive side, the real highlight is under the hood.
Performance
The X4 M40i is powered by a 3.0L BMW straight-six engine producing 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, making it the fastest in its class with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.
The vehicle has near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, but if you want more track-focused performance, you should consider the M Competition model, which offers a perfect 50/50 weight balance and achieves 0-60 mph in the 3-second range.
Wheels and Brakes
The X4 M40i comes with upgraded 20-inch gloss black staggered wheels. Behind the front wheels, you’ll find four-piston blue brake calipers, while the rear features single floating calipers. Although this is not a full M model, it delivers impressive performance.
Fuel Efficiency and Competition
The X4 M40i achieves 22 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. Compared to rivals like Mercedes, Genesis, and Audi, this model offers more horsepower than most, except for Mercedes.
In terms of straight-line performance and cornering dynamics, the X4 M40i stands out as the best in its class.
Exterior Details
The X4 features M Performance side-view mirrors with integrated LED turn signals and gloss black window trim. The coupe-style roofline gives it a sportier look but results in a slightly more rigid ride compared to the X3. Despite this, the X4 feels like a lifted car in terms of handling.
Choosing Between X3 and X4
Personally, I would choose the X3 over the X4 because it offers more practicality. The X3 is longer and has a boxy shape, making it more suitable for taller passengers.
As someone who is 6’3″, I appreciate the additional space in the X3. That said, both models offer a fun driving experience.
Rear Design and Cargo Space
The rear of the X4 features standard LED taillights, dual exhaust outlets, and a rear diffuser. It also has reverse parking sensors and a power trunk.
The cargo space is 18.5 cubic feet, and with the rear seats folded down in a 40/20/40 or 60/40 split, it increases to 50.5 cubic feet. Under the cargo floor, you’ll find additional storage.
Interior Features
Inside, the X4 M40i offers a driver-focused layout. The Takara Red Sensatec interior includes 12-way power-adjustable front seats with manual cushion extensions and heated front seats.
The driver’s seat has memory functions. Despite the coupe design, headroom and legroom in the front are adequate.
Technology
The X4 M40i features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and Bluetooth audio streaming.
The reverse camera is standard, and you still have physical buttons for AM/FM and SiriusXM radio. The center console includes a wireless charging pad, USB port, and a 12V charger.
Driving Modes and Steering
The center console features a drive mode selector with Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro modes. You can switch modes on the fly to adjust the vehicle’s performance. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is heated and includes multifunction controls and paddle shifters.
Rear Seats and Passenger Comfort
Despite the coupe design, the rear seats offer reasonable space. I’m 6’3″, and I fit comfortably in the back. There’s a storage net behind each front seat, third-zone climate control, USB ports, and air vents. The center armrest includes cup holders, though the rear center seat is a bit cramped for three passengers.
Sound System and Interior Details
The X4 M40i comes with a Harman Kardon sound system, ambient lighting, and carbon fiber trim. The windows have one-touch up/down functionality. The interior storage pockets are well-sized for everyday use.
Driving Impressions
The X4 M40i delivers thrilling performance. The inline-six engine produces a satisfying exhaust note, and the vehicle feels planted in corners.
The steering is light yet responsive, making it suitable for both daily driving and track use. The brakes are strong and provide confidence during spirited driving.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- The availability of an M Competition model for the X4.
- Engaging driving dynamics with near-perfect weight distribution.
- Powerful inline-six engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger.
Cons:
- Lack of a standard 360° reverse camera.
- Slightly rigid ride due to the coupe design.
- Rear seat space is limited compared to the X3.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the 2025 BMW X4 M40i is a fun and dynamic vehicle. While the X3 offers more practicality, the X4 M40i stands out for its sporty design and engaging driving experience. If you’re considering competition, the Mercedes offers more torque, but it’s slower and more expensive. For those looking for a performance SUV that feels like a sports car, the X4 M40i is a solid choice.
Overall, the X3 and X4, both are fun to drive. The X4 M40i, in particular, shines with its powerful engine and dynamic handling. If you’re interested in the M Competition model, it’s worth considering as it unlocks even more performance. Thanks to BMW of Wesley Chapel for providing this vehicle for the review.
