Today, we have a first look at the all-new 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness and the first-ever Forester Hybrid. If you saw the 2025 Forester and felt it was missing something, you’re in for a treat! These two exciting models bring new features and capabilities to the Forester lineup.
2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness: More Rugged Than Ever

Enhanced Off-Road Capability
The new Forester Wilderness builds upon Subaru’s legendary all-wheel-drive capability with increased ground clearance of 9.3 inches—nearly matching the Outback Wilderness. With approach and departure angles of 23.5 and 25.5 degrees, respectively, this model outperforms its bigger sibling when it comes to tackling rough terrain.
Subaru’s Active Torque Split Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is standard, enhanced with Dual X-Mode for additional off-road prowess. Unlike previous models, this Wilderness variant allows X-Mode operation at speeds exceeding 25 mph, improving performance on mixed-terrain drives.
Powertrain and Performance

While some hoped for a turbocharged engine, the Wilderness retains the reliable 2.5L four-cylinder, producing 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. The CVT transmission has been refined to detect gradient changes, engaging a low-ratio mode when needed. Underbody protection and a spare tire (though not full-size) ensure better preparedness for off-road conditions.
Distinctive Wilderness Design

From the hood decal that reduces glare to the rugged Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires, the Forester Wilderness is purpose-built for adventure. Standard roof rails support up to 800 lbs when stationary, making rooftop camping a viable option.
Additional features include hexagonal LED fog lights, redesigned grille work, and recovery tie-down loops. Inside, the Wilderness maintains Subaru’s signature durable interior with water-resistant StarTex upholstery, copper-colored accents, and an updated center console with wireless charging.
Technology and Safety

The digital gauge cluster allows for customizable displays, including navigation integration. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Subaru’s EyeSight safety system has been enhanced with adaptive cruise control, lane centering, collision mitigation, and an emergency stop feature that activates if the driver becomes unresponsive.
The rear seats offer plenty of space, along with USB-A and USB-C ports, air vents, and a fold-down armrest. While the second-row seat warmers are missing from this tester, they may be available on higher trims.
The 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness is expected to arrive in dealerships by fall. We can’t wait to put it to the test on the Anaconda Trail later this year!
2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid: A New Era of Efficiency

As the hybrid crossover market expands, Subaru joins the fray with the 2025 Forester Hybrid. This isn’t the brand’s first attempt at hybridization—the Crosstrek Hybrid debuted in 2013, followed by a plug-in hybrid variant in 2019. Now, Subaru brings electrification to its popular Forester.
Sleek Yet Familiar Design

Visually, the Forester Hybrid mirrors its gas-powered sibling but features exclusive badging, wheels, and an optional blacked-out roofline. It maintains 8.7 inches of ground clearance, ensuring solid off-road performance despite its electrified nature.
Hybrid Powertrain and Fuel Efficiency

Unlike Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid, which uses a dedicated rear electric motor, Subaru’s hybrid system integrates two electric motors into the transmission. This setup maintains the traditional symmetrical AWD experience while delivering a combined 194 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque.
The small 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery is positioned under the rear floor, meaning no room for a spare tire—Subaru provides a fix-a-flat kit instead. With an estimated 35 mpg combined, the Forester Hybrid offers an impressive 581-mile driving range on a full tank.
Tech-Forward Cabin and Safety Features
Inside, the hybrid model features a new digital gauge cluster with dedicated hybrid information screens. It will be available in four trims: Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. The vertical touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Subaru’s EyeSight safety system is standard, featuring collision mitigation, lane centering, and adaptive cruise control. The triple-camera setup, positioned near the rearview mirror, enhances driver-assist functionality.
