The Ford Mustang is an iconic legendary nameplate in American automotive history. It has total seven generations starting from the 1964 and has unique body style for each year. it has been designed in many body styles like sleek fastbacks to modern coupes.

From the debut years of 1964 to 1966 Mustangs body style was hardtop coupe making it suitable for everyday driving. it had fixed roof, chrome accents, and options like bucket seats which till dates feels very much sporty. There was a perfect open-air convertible model making it much stylish back in the days.

Then there was 1964 fastback model which had sloping roofline that merged with cabin and trunk and had customized rally stripes or GT badges. These early models had little design tweaks like enlarged grilles and disc brakes by 1966.

From 1971 to 1973, Mustang designed to look much bigger and these models got nickname of “big body” mainly due to larger wheelbase and flatter rooflines. The hardtop models got luxurious touches with trims like Grandé. Due to stricter emissions rules and fuel shortages started to dismantle v8 dominance.

1974 to 1978 The 1973 oil crisis was at the pick level which forced Ford to redesign Mustang body style entirely. this was Mustang II models acquired Pinto platform that prioritized efficiency over brute force. these Mustangs ditched V8s at launch for four- and six-cylinder engines.

From 1974 and 1975, Mustang lineup has evolved into simpler notchback coupe with upgraded Ghia interiors and made it hatchback for practicality. Then come the third generation era which was from 1979 to 1993. this time we started to see versatile fox body style with sharper angles and better handling. Starting from 1979 to 1982 the notchback coupe offered boxy shape with pop-up headlights.

The middle 1983 to 1986 period revived the convertible with improved level of safety. The special editions like SVO and wind-tunnel-tested spoilers, highlighted engineering advancements. Then come the aero-focused facelift from 1987 to 1993 gave Mustang all styles like coupe, hatchback, and convertible.

1994 to 2004 also known as the fourth generation Mustang was nostalgic with 1990s tech. Sticking to coupe and convertible formats from 1994 to 1998 coupes started to have rounded edges and bigger fenders at the same time convertibles improved top mechanisms for quieter rides.

The Cobra trims was 30 years old at this time having V8s performance. then in 1999 to 2004 Mustangs got “New Edge” update which has sharpened lines with creased hoods and bold intakes.

The S550 marked a milestone with independent suspension for all, widening bodies for stability in fastback and convertible forms. Early years, 2015 to 2017, featured trapezoid grilles and turbo four-cylinders for efficiency. Convertibles gained better rigidity.
