Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 2,718 units of its 2025 Super Duty F-650 and F-750 trucks due to a potential tie rod failure. The recall stems from improperly heat-treated ball studs in the tie rod assemblies, which pose a risk of breaking and causing a loss of steering control.
Manufacturing and Recall Details
The affected vehicles were produced between April 4, 2024, and June 27, 2024, at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant. This facility, which employs 1,773 workers, including 1,610 hourly employees, also manufactures the E-Series Cutaway, Stripped Chassis, and Super Duty F-350 through F-550.
Ford has already begun inspecting and repairing vehicles at the Avon Lake-based plant. For those in dealer inventory or already with customers, dealers will check the front-axle tie rod assembly for the suspect ball studs. If the Julian dates on these assemblies fall within the problematic timeframe, they will be replaced with properly treated components.
The Source of the Problem
The issue arose when a sub-supplier, USK, inadvertently mixed experimental ball studs with production units. These faulty ball studs were then supplied to Dana Global Products of Apodaca, Mexico, who in turn provided the assemblies to Ford. Dana notified Ford of the problem on June 4, 2024, leading to an immediate stop-ship order and subsequent escalation to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG).
Potential Risks and Customer Notifications
The main concern with the defective ball studs is that they could crack and break without warning, disconnecting the tie rod from the steering knuckle. This would result in a complete loss of steering control for the right-side wheel, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
Ford will notify affected owners via first-class mail between August 13 and August 20. Owners can also proactively check their vehicle identification number (VIN) against Ford’s recall database. The VINs for these Super Duty trucks start with the number 1.
Model Options and Pricing
For the 2025 model year, the Super Duty F-650 and F-750 come in four configurations. The base model, the F-650 SD Gas Straight Frame, starts at $69,685. On the higher end, the F-750 SD Diesel Straight Frame is priced from $80,895. The models are powered by either the 7.3-liter Godzilla V8 gas engine or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel engine.
