2025 Chevy Equinox RS Review: Pros, Cons, and Everything You Need to Know

Hello, everyone! My name is Andrew, This week, i had the opportunity to test drive the brand-new 2025 Chevy Equinox. Competing in the highly competitive compact SUV segment against industry leaders like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, the Equinox has a lot to offer. However, like any car, it’s not perfect. In today’s review, we’ll explore the pros, cons, standout features, and how it compares to some of its rivals.

Pros of the 2025 Chevy Equinox

Sleek and Modern Design

The Equinox adopts a bold new look for 2025, inspired by its larger sibling, the Chevy Traverse. With sharp geometric lines, split headlights, a blacked-out floating roof, and RS trim details like red accents and 19-inch alloy wheels, the Equinox feels upscale and modern. This design approach makes it stand out in its segment.

Tech-Packed Cabin

The Equinox impresses with its tech-forward interior:

  • Digital Instrument Cluster: Fully customizable and standard across trims.
  • Massive Touchscreen: Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and built-in Google integration make the infotainment experience seamless.
  • 360-Degree Camera: High-quality visuals aid parking and navigation in tight spaces.
  • Digital Rearview Mirror: A welcome feature that enhances rear visibility.

Comfort-Oriented Driving Dynamics

Equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged engine producing 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque (184 lb-ft in FWD models), the Equinox offers adequate power for daily driving. Its soft suspension absorbs bumps, providing a smooth and relaxing ride.

Interior Space and Practicality

Despite slightly smaller cargo space than rivals, the Equinox offers a solid 30 cubic feet of storage with the seats up and 65 cubic feet with them folded. The rear seats provide ample legroom and headroom, even for taller passengers. Details like dual rear USB ports, air vents, and optional heated seats enhance passenger comfort.

Affordable Pricing (Base Models)

Starting at $28,600, the Equinox positions itself as an affordable alternative to its pricier competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Even with added features in higher trims, it remains competitively priced.

Cons of the 2025 Chevy Equinox

No Hybrid Option

In a segment where fuel efficiency often takes center stage, the absence of a hybrid or plug-in hybrid variant is a glaring omission. With a combined EPA rating of around 26 MPG, the Equinox lags behind hybrid competitors like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (40+ MPG) and Honda CR-V Hybrid (40+ MPG).

Lack of Standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

Unlike rivals such as the Subaru Forester or Mazda CX-50, which include AWD as standard, the Equinox reserves it for higher trims.

Limited Premium Features

While the Equinox has many technological perks, some premium features are absent:

  • No Branded Audio System: Sound quality is decent but lacks the refinement seen in some competitors.
  • No Sport Mode in RS Trim: Despite its Rally Sport (RS) badge, the Equinox lacks a sport mode, which could appeal to those seeking a more dynamic driving experience.
  • No Ambient Lighting Options: This may not be a dealbreaker but would have added a modern, upscale touch.

Interior Materials and Build Quality

While the cabin design is modern and visually appealing, materials such as synthetic leather and hard plastics make it feel less premium compared to rivals like the Mazda CX-5, which boasts more luxurious interiors.

Performance Shortcomings

The Equinox isn’t the quickest in its class, with a 0–60 time of 8.5–9 seconds. While fine for daily driving, it doesn’t deliver the spirited performance of some competitors. Additionally, there’s noticeable road noise at higher speeds, detracting from the overall refinement.

Limited Towing Capacity

With a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 lbs, the Equinox falls short compared to models like the Subaru Forester, which can tow up to 3,000 lbs in some trims.
