The 2027 Chevrolet Sonic is now a “subcompact SUV coupe” as unlike the line’s classic subcompact hatchbacks and sedans. The 2027 Chevrolet Sonic is globally debuting in Brazil.
The new Sonic will be on the ground in Brazil as of May 11, 2026. The new Sonic will signal a substantial change to General Motors’ South American operations, in addition to a new line of design language for the company.

Why SUV Coupe?
Bringing back the Sonic nameplate on a crossover platform shows how traditional hatchbacks are falling out of favor compared to taller utility vehicles.
Set to be placed within the Onix and Tracker in the line-up, the Sonic will attempt to capture the “entry-level crossover” market amidst models such as the Fiat Pulse and the Renault Kardian.
Performance & Powertrain
The 2027 GM Sonic is manufactured on GM’s Global Emerging Markets (GEM) platform. Having a platform shared with the GM Onix, the Sonic tends to share a number of internal components and a similar wheelbase with the Onix.
The Sonic is designed with a higher ground clearance of about 20 cm. Additionally, the Sonic has a reinforced suspension, allowing it to manage the depleted and rough road conditions of South America.
The Sonic now has the 1.0L, 3-cylinder, 115 hp turbo-flex, and 186 Nm of torque engine that GM now offers. The engine comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission as there is no manual option for the Brazilian market. It is designed to be efficient with the 1.0L engine having a 14.8 km/l.claimed combined.
Interior Design

The updated interior of 2027 Chevrolet Sonic sees a significant departure from the entry-level Onix, with the all-new Virtual Cockpit system designed to enhance the cabin experience from a first-class perspective.
It will feature an 8-inch digital instrument panel, a 10-inch multimedia high-definition touchscreen, and provide wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an OnStar plan with a built-in WiFi hotspot.
Safety is a vital aspect of the design with the Chevrolet Intelligent Driving system, presented in the Premier and RS trims, aided by a wide-angle HD front camera. Autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist are some of the enhanced safety tech features.
Release Date & Pricing
At the Gravataí facility in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, General Motors is investing $1.2 billion, starting with the Sonic.
Brazil is the first country to receive the vehicle, and the remaining countries in the Southern Pacific region to receive the vehicle will be Argentina, Colombia, and Chile in the second half of 2026.
Two trims of the Sonic will be introduced: the first is the Premier trim, selling at an estimated starting price point of $26,500, and emphasizing class and luxury; the second, the RS trim, will be sold starting at $27,500 and focused on an edgy trim and sporty design.
The GM Sonic will be a major release to the emerging markets of Southern Latin America. Presently, General Motors has focused more on the Chevrolet Trax, covering the entry-level segment of the North American region, and has no current plans to release the Sonic crossover to Canadian and American markets.
