Types of Ford Broncos – Detailed Buyers GUIDE

The Ford Bronco has seen six incarnations, changing from a tiny, tough off-roader to a full-size SUV and now a really capable modern adventure vehicle.

The Historic Generations (1966-1996)

Types of Ford Broncos
  • First Generation (1966-1977) Originally intended as a compact SUV to compete with the Jeep CJ-5. Offered in three body configurations, a wagon, a half-cab truck and an open-air roadster, the three-door wagon form rapidly became its most iconic
  • Second Generation (1978-1979): Ford moved the Bronco to a significantly larger, full-size platform, based on its F-Series (F-100) trucks. This brief version was limited to V8 power and the availability of a removable roof with a rear window that dropped straight into the tailgate.
  • Third Generation (1980-1986) 3rd Generation Bronco was put on a lighter F-150 foundation for better fuel economy and independent front suspension . Also produced by Ford was the Bronco II (1984-1990), a distinct, smaller SUV that was based on the Ford Ranger pickup.
  • Fourth Generation (1987-1991) and Fifth Generation (1992-1996) Updates included modern features such as electronic fuel injection, rear anti-lock brakes and improved interior packages such as the Eddie Bauer version. The original Bronco’s run ended in 1996 when consumers began desiring four-door family SUVs.

The Modern Era (Sixth Generation, 2021-Present)

In 2021, Ford resurrected the Bronco nameplate, going back to its body-on-frame heritage with changeable tops and doors. The 2026 portfolio as it is now includes many trims for many off-road demands.

  • Big Bend: Adds everyday comfort features, aluminium wheels and extra terrain settings.
  • Outer Banks: It’s all about luxury style and technology for drivers looking for a more refined everyday driver.
  • Badlands: Rugged off-road suspension and an optional 2.7L V6 engine give this truck the goods to go on tough trails and rough terrain. Heritage Edition combines current hardware with 1960s throwback style such as antique colours, white roof and classic badging.
  • Stroppe Edition: A customised trim level with Baja racing inspiration, a 2.7L V6 engine, Fox internal bypass dampers and exclusive racing graphics.
  • Raptor: The family’s extreme, high-speed desert runner. It has a special 418-horsepower 3.0L V6, a considerably wider track, 37-inch all-terrain tires and an innovative Fox semi-active suspension system. Along with these, Ford now sells the Bronco Sport, a different compact crossover vehicle based on the Ford Escape platform, optimised for lighter trails and everyday commuting.

From its beginnings as a practical 1966 compact off-roader to today’s high-speed desert runners, the Ford Bronco has evolved into a highly specialised adventure platform. Whether it’s a vintage first-generation restoration, or rock crawls in a modern Badlands, or commuting in a Bronco Sport, the lineup now covers all the levels of off-roading. The Bronco nameplate is one of the most durable and adaptable 4×4 emblems in the history of the automobile.
