How to Avoid Getting a Speeding Fine: A Simple Guide

Today, we’re going to show you how to avoid getting a speeding fine. We’ll walk you through how speed is detected and reveal just how accurate your car’s speedometer really is. By the end of this guide, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge to steer clear of unexpected fines.

How Speed is Measured

We’re using a calibrated speed detection device, the same kind that police often use. Our mission is to measure the accuracy of a car’s speedometer and compare it with popular GPS apps like Waze and Google Maps, which rely on GPS signals to estimate your car’s speed.

Testing the Car Speedometer

First up, we measured the car’s speed when the speedometer showed 80 km/h. With the cruise control set at 80 km/h, our speed gun revealed the actual speed was 76 km/h. This means the speedometer was off by 4 km/h.

We repeated the test at 100 km/h, where the actual speed turned out to be 95 km/h—a 5 km/h difference. This shows that the faster you go, the less accurate your speedometer might be.

Why Speedometers Can Be Inaccurate

You might think your car’s speedometer is perfectly accurate, but a lot of factors can affect its precision. Things like different rims or tires can slightly alter how your car’s speed is displayed.

Testing GPS Apps: Waze vs. Google Maps

Next, we put Waze, a popular GPS app, to the test to see how accurately it measures speed. At 80 km/h, Waze was spot-on, showing exactly 80 km/h. At 100 km/h, it also remained accurate, making it a reliable tool for keeping track of your speed.

Then, we tried Google Maps, which features a built-in speedometer. At 80 km/h, Google Maps fluctuated between 77 and 82 km/h, which could be concerning. At 100 km/h, the fluctuation was even worse, showing speeds between 96 and 102 km/h. This could potentially lead to a speeding fine if you’re relying solely on Google Maps for speed monitoring.

The Verdict

In conclusion, car speedometers are often slightly inaccurate by design, but apps like Waze are a reliable alternative for tracking your speed. However, based on our tests, Google Maps is less reliable and could result in you accidentally speeding.

So, if you’re relying on GPS apps to monitor your speed, we recommend using Waze over Google Maps to avoid any unwanted fines. We hope this guide helps you stay safe on the road. Let us know in the comments if you’ve ever gotten a speeding fine while using one of these apps. And if you found this information helpful, please like and share it with your friends.
