I won’t lie. I was a little freaked out when they first said the Model 389 was going. The Peterbilt 389 was the symbol of American big rig trucks and was the all time classic of the industry. I thought they were ruining something awesome. I was also a little worried when I started seeing the 2027 Peterbilt 589 as well.
I was hoping I was wrong about the 389 and that this truck wasn’t going to be a victim of the modern times and regulations like so many others. Peterbilt was able to make a wider and modern design of the cab and still keep all of the styling that the rest of us also love. Because of that, I think this is the most driver centric design of all the trucks on the road today.
Exterior Design
The 2027 Peterbilt 589 has some heritage elements which trace back to the classic 379 and by looking at the exterior of the 589, we can see how the 379 is influencing the 589.
The things that I saw are.
- The Front End: I have to say, I’m really a fan of the giant rectangular aluminum hood with the bold mesh grille, combined with the classic round head lamp pods.
- The Brightwork: I admire the tall duty 15 inches external air cleaner combined with the 7 inches tall exhaust stacks and the shining Texas-style square bumper. They really nailed the tall and long look that I admire most in the classic big rigs.
- Serviceability: I admire that they opted for a multi-piece aluminum hood and fenders, held in place with huck fasteners. I know huck fastener removal won’t bend the aluminum, and if I ever wreck a fender, replacement won’t take an entire shop day.
But I think the real beauty is shown at the firewall. 389 always felt narrow and restricting to me, but the 589 is built using Peterbilt’s newer 2.1 meter cab structure. I wondered how wider cabs could look good paired with a long retro hood. I think the cab was cleverly lowered by two inches and the new molding was added to complete the look.
Powertrain & Performance
I think the choices for the driveshafts are sweet. As either a coast to coast owner-operator or just dragging whatever trade you need, there is plenty of options to really fit that to your personal taste. I took some time to examine the core value of every option on the table, and this is what I found:
| Specification | Core Options & Limits |
|---|---|
| Engine Choice | PACCAR MX-13 (up to 510 HP) or Cummins X15 (up to 605 HP) |
| Peak Torque | 1,450 to 2,050 lb-ft |
| Transmission Type | Eaton Fuller 18-Speed Manual OR Eaton Endurant Automated (TX-12 / TX-18) |
| Front Axle Rating | 12,000 to 22,800 lbs |
| Rear Axle Rating | 21,000 to 78,000 lbs |
When it comes to an ultimate driver experience, personally, I would have to go with the combination of the Cummins X15 from the specs and the Eaton Fuller 18 speed manual. A close second would have to be the way it stands without the other competition. A happy sight for me was the air-assisted hydraulic clutch.
It’s nice for the driver for sure, and from what I understand, that would totally eliminate the effort needed for the clutch, while still giving the driver kind of that old school manual clutch feel.
Interior Design
As soon as you walk in you can appreciate the 2.1-meter cab. It features much improved shoulder room, provides a larger walkway to the sleeper, and offers better overall visibility with those big mirrors.
They did a great job on the design of the interior with the right mix of custom wood grain and leather with the integration of modern technology. The digital dash display is right there next to the tactile switch and that is exactly where I prefer my metrics to be.
Depending on what you need, the sleeper configurations are highly customizable:
- Day Cab configurations (which I think are great if you need optimized three-person seating).
- Low Roof configurations for specialized hauling (44-inch and 58-inch UltraLow).
- High Roof configurations for maximum living space (72-inch and 80-inch options).
If you step up to the Premier or Platinum trims like I wanted to, you get an integrated refrigerator, a pull-out writing desk, and massive dual cup holders. I personally think the premium insulation package is a game-changer for cutting down cabin noise and fatigue during long hauls.
Limited Editions That Caught My Eye
The 589 line-up gets me pumped because of the limited-edition, super collectible variants.
1. The “Freedom 250” Special Edition
Since America will turn 250 in 2026, Peterbilt is doing a run of just 250 units.
- Exterior: I think the 3 color metallic paint with plenty of Freedom Red & Blue is really nice. The etching on the Freedom 250 guards and the Freedom 250 sleeper badge is also great!
- Interior: I gotta say the headrest with the Freedom 250 logo and the dash with the limited number of this run also make this truck feel super special.
2. The Larson Group TLG Executive Edition
This one’s a holy grail just 11 made.
The Rig A 72″
Flat Top Tractor with a massive Cummins 565 HP engine with a custom stainless steel lighting package and a sick custom paint job.
