Why MotorWeek Crowned the 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback the Anti-SUV

The 2026 Drivers’ Choice Awards from MotorWeek have been announced and many of us have been surprised by the 2026 Kia K4 winning Best Family Car amongst the dominating market of crossover SUVs.

While the Kia K4 sedan was made to take the place of the Forte as Kia’s sedan, wait no more as the 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback has landed! And so has MotorWeek’s fun. MotorWeek stated the K4 lineup was able to fit a compact entry “an entire midsize sport sedan’s worth of fun.”

Exterior Design

The new 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback is not your average compact car. With a total length about 11 inches smaller than its sedan sibling, you can notice a major difference at first sight with an altered rear end and roof.

Rather than a clunky typical subcompact boxy rear end, it’s sleek and tapered. Deeply pronounced and sculpted rear hips make a statement, and long, sharp LED lights emphasize its overall look with a wide and aggressive stance. It has a sporty presence with a compact design.

Interior Design

It is easy to see why MotorWeek gives this vehicle high marks for daily commutes. Cabin layout is upscale and intentional instead of the purely utilitarian designs other vehicles use.

At the front you have almost a full 30 inches of display. It wraps around the driver and is divided into three sections.

  • The 12.3 inch instrument digital cluster displays important information the driver needs to see.
  • A 5 inch screen dedicated to the climate control, which means no menu diving just to change the fan speed.
  • The 12.3 inch screen for entertainment is also a touch screen. It also has Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

Comfort Style

The hatchback version is designed with thoughtful interior proportions and utilizes available space better than the sedan despite being almost a foot shorter. The height extending along the roof of the entire car enables adult rear passengers to sit comfortably with plenty of leg and head room. Plus, the claustrophobically-tight rear seats that have become the expectation within this class of vehicle have been eliminated.

As you move to the higher trims, you will be at the near-luxury level for the interior. There is white piping, front seats that have both heating and cooling functions, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and Digital Key 2.0.

Engine & Performance

Kia is focusing on potential buyers with its 2026 K4 Hatchback as it is shifting to a more focused trim offering. On that note, there is a clear divide in performance.

1. The Standard Commuter (EX and GT-Line) – The base model comes with a strong 2.0 liter naturally aspirated 4 cylinder, which comes in at 147 horsepower and a front wheel drive Intelligent Variable Transmission. It is safe to say that this is a solid pick for city driving as the tune is optimized for efficiency and smooth operation.

Engine Options

If you want a sportier option like what MotorWeek showed off, the GT-Line Turbo is the top option.

The Engine Details

  • Engine: 1.6-liter Turbo 4-cylinder
  • Horsepower: 190 hp, Torque: 195 lb-ft
  • Transmission: 8-speed auto (skipping CVTs and dual clutch setups for sharper and better shifts).

The GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo give you the rear multi-link independent suspension and get rid of the rear torsion beam suspension. The GT4 provides a ride that is smooth and composed that MotorWeek also highlights as class leading.

This multi-link rear suspension absorbs road imperfections and can handle corners without body lean. While it doesn’t have the sharpness and track-friendliness of a VW GTI like a hot hatch would be classified as, the GT4 provides a daily driving experience that is surprisingly fun.

Safety Features

The K4 wins Best Family Car mainly due to its investment in safety features. The K4 comes with 11 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Higher trims offer an additional 29 active features, which offer things like:

  • an indicator showing if cars and cyclists are coming, or even if someone is just walking across the street
  • cruise control that works even in a stop and go situation
  • 360° camera that turns on when the car is moving to see all around the car for parking – Lane keeping and blind spot assistant
