Ford reworked its popular Escape compact crossover for the 2023 model year by giving it style upgrades and better interior tech. Ford offers four different powertrain choices for the Escape: two EcoBoost engines, a hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid.

  • Base Engine (1.5L EcoBoost): This 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder engine delivers 180 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. It can be paired with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and is standard on the Active and ST-Line trims.
  • Upgraded Engine (2.0L EcoBoost): The larger 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It is available only with all-wheel drive and comes standard on the ST-Line Select, ST-Line Elite, and Platinum models.
  • Hybrid Powertrain: The hybrid combines a 2.5L inline-four engine with electric assistance to produce 192 horsepower. It is available with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, and can be chosen for all ST trims and the Platinum model.
  • Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): This powertrain also uses the 2.5L engine but includes a 10.7 kWh battery pack, offering 210 horsepower and up to 37 miles of electric-only driving range.

The gas-only models come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while hybrids use a CVT.

If you’re set on the plug-in hybrid, that’s your answer. Otherwise, the ST-Line Select with the 2.0L EcoBoost is a great choice for its all-wheel drive and powerful engine. Adding the Tech Pack #2 for an additional $3,700 gives you luxury features like intelligent cruise control, a 360-degree camera, and an upgraded sound system, all while keeping the total price under $38,000—a solid deal in today’s market.
