2026 Subaru Performance Lineup Reviewed

There have been some huge changes in Subaru’s performance division. The famous ‘STI’ models that used to have different design from every other models with huge spoiler wings are gone. But Subaru is still into the culture of building performance models.

Now, Subaru’s focus is more on ‘STI-tuned’ enhancements. Mechanics like racetrack handling, Brembo brakes, and tuned dampers that are usually only in the more expensive track-ready cars are now available on everyday driving cars. Subaru performance models are based on the WRX and the BRZ and there will now be more limited aesthetic designs along with the performance changes.

2026 Subaru WRX

I think the Subaru WRX is the only real performance sedan Subaru has left in their lineup mainly because of it’s all-wheel-drive option. Here’s some specs of it:

Engine Type2.4L Naturally Aspirated 4-Cylinder BOXER
Horsepower228 hp @ 7,000 rpm
Torque184 lb-ft @ 3,700 rpm
0-60 mph Time~6.0 Seconds (Manual transmission)

It features trim levels like Premium, Limited, GT, tS, and the brand new Series Yellow. The major updates appear to be made on chassis and driver engagement. It’s great to see Subaru focusing on issues that had negative feedback and lots of customer feedbacks.

First start with the WRX tS, I am really excited about this one. tS was designed with Subaru Tecnica International (STI), which features variable dampers suspensions (Comfort, Normal, and Sport modes) as an standard. A great detail to me are oversized cross-drilled rotors with 6 and 2 piston Brembo® calipers in the front and rear.

On the inside, the fully digital 12.3 inch cluster along with Recaro® performance seats are a great addition.

Next is Limited Edition “Series.Yellow”:it’s production is limited to the 350 units only, I bet you will you not see any unit of this driving around. This model has same hardware to the tS model and additionally high-contrast Sunrise Yellow paint.

This model features 19” matte-black alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, and of course, the interior has sport some crazy color stitching. I think it looks great personally.

2026 Subaru BRZ

The BRZ is the clear winner for drivers like me who wants balance, momentum, and simplicity over brute power. Unlike the rest of all wheel drive models, Subaru has made the BRZ a lightweight and simple rear wheel drive platform, which is always a good thing in my books.

For me the track-focused tS, and a limited-edition variant, the BRZ strikes as a rare breed of mechanical sports cars currently available in the market:

  • Pure Mechanical Dynamics: I think it’s great that the naturally aspirated 2.4L Boxer engine pushes torque through a standard 6-speed manual. you may be asking me about the a 6-speed automatic model, but if you ask me, it does not felt smooth to me while driving.
  • The BRZ tS: then there is this a more track-oriented option. Personally, I love that it comes with an STI-tuned suspension that uses Hitachi dampers to control body roll and improve grip, and paired with a factory Brembo braking system, that should help with braking performance and remain intact for longer time.
  • BRZ Series Yellow: Like the WRX, the BRZ also has its own ultra-limited Series Yellow edition. It combines tS level performance hardware with Sunrise Yellow paint and matte black wheels. Its MSRP is $39,360 and limited to the exclusive 350 units produced worldwide. This makes it a true collector’s item.

Other Performance Models from Subaru

The WRX and BRZ are indeed true performance model from the Subaru but i see this sporty DNA is spreading across its lineup.

  • Impreza RS: I wouldn’t call it a true track-ready car, but the hatchback RS trim has some sporty features to it. with the 2.5L Boxer engine it produces 180 horsepower, and sport-cloth seats and aluminum pedals that make it a fun daily driver.
  • Outback and Legacy XT Trims: For pure utility, the XT trims of the boxy redesigned Outback SUV or Legacy sedan will offer a real, noticeable, performance boost with 2.4 liter turbo engine (260 hp) for highway passing.
