From the spy shots and rumors, Toyota is testing an ultra-high-performance, desert-running Tundra TRD Hammer. There are prototypes with extremely large and wide front and rear fenders with built in vents, and heavy-duty steel bumpers designed for high approach and departure angles.

There are also extremely large and wide off-road tires with heavy-duty wheels and a design in the hood for high clearance, and aggressive exterior design. For high-speed off-road running and desert desert running, the truck will have high speed and desert running off-road running.

Exterior Design Upgrades

Branding improvements for the standard lineup have the Tundra looking modern and boxy with the TNGA-F platform for the 2027 model. Like the standard Tundra, the front grille will be more sculpted and the trim will be specific across the line.

The base model Tundra, known as the SR, will be the work-version, while the top-tier, Capstone, will be the luxury model. The sleek LED headlights will feature a new DRLs with Tundra sequential taillights. Improved function will come with the more basic model of the Tundra.

The Tundras will still have the highly durable, composite beds and the SR will be work-ready with a towing harness and a 7/4 connector. The larger, 32.2 gallon tank for the Tundra SR will also be standard.

Engine & Performance

Toyota has moved on from their old V8 engines and are now putting all the finishing touches on their twin-turbocharged V6 engines. For the 2027 line of vehicles, their engineers have headed in a new direction, focusing on the durability of the engines and doing some fine-tuning on the software.

Some of the anticipated changes include improved engine blocks, changes to the bearing caps, and improvements to internal structures to help increase engine life. They will also see changes to the shifting programming in the 10-speed automatic to help improve the throttle response to be more instant.

For the base model, the SR trim, customers will get a fully gas 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 with a power rating of 348 horses and 405 lb-ft of torque. The up trim models, the SR5 and the Limited, get an improved ‘max’-version of the twin-turbo V6, with a whopping 389 horses and 479 lb-ft of torque.

For the highest-capacity build, the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid pairs a V6 twin-turbo with a full-assist electric motor, yielding 437 horses and 583 lb-ft of torque. For towing, a base, fully gas Tundra with all the required gear can tow up to 12,000 lbs with ease. The i-FORCE MAX Hybrids are not far behind at 11,450 lbs.
